Welcome to the first edition of the EUniWell Newsletter,
the European University for Well-Being’s quarterly publication, which
will keep you informed about exciting developments in progressing our
shared vision for improving European citizens’ quality of life.
There are seven partner universities in the European University for
Well-Being (EUniWell) and we are all proud and delighted that the
European Commission has announced its support for our collaboration with
funding to support our goals.
Whether they are at the Universities of Birmingham, Firenze, Köln,
Leiden, Linnaeus, Nantes or Semmelweis, colleagues across Europe have
been working together to breathe life into our exciting collaboration.
We have already seen valuable joint activity with the launch of our
European Policy Commission on 17 June 2020, designed to add further
knowledge and understanding to the global drive that we all hope will
overcome coronavirus. Exciting as this event was, it is but the first
step in our shared journey which we believe will deliver significant
benefits from bringing together such a rich diversity of institutions –
across Europe and beyond.
Our alliance will help to create an environment that allows for
European citizens and their global neighbours to be well-educated,
socially responsible, healthy, inclusive and diverse — all critical
aspects of well-being and particularly relevant as we face the ongoing
world-wide threat of COVID-19.
We are working hard to develop research, teaching and policy
development partnerships that involve the universities’ 255,000 students
and 36,500 staff. These will focus on well-being, supporting social and
individual well-being in a global setting.
We have identified four key areas for research and teaching, closely
linked to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in which we have strong
expertise and which, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, have gained
additional urgency:
- • Well-Being & Health (SDG 3, Good Health & Well-Being)
- • Individual & Social Well-Being (SDG 16, Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions)
- • Environment, Urbanity & Well-Being (SDG 11, Sustainable Cities & Communities)
- • Teacher Education (SDG 4, Quality Education)
Students are the heart of our alliance and involved in all aspects of
our work, including governance. Supported by €5 million of European
Commission funding, our partnership will support learning at all ages –
for university students, life-long learners and their teachers;
fostering equality and diversity. We will train the next generation of
Europeans, enabling scientific breakthroughs and successful knowledge
transfer to benefit society.
By combining the forces and strengths of our seven universities, we
believe we are creating an ambitious, visionary and distinctive alliance
working across national boundaries to help improve the well-being of
Europe’s population.
We look forward to you joining us on our journey.
