French Language Courses

The Institute of French as a Second Language (i-FLE) offers French languages courses for all proficiency levels :

  • Semester courses (18 hours a week)
  • Evening support courses (4 hours a week)
  • Spring and summer courses
  • Courses for foreign researchers (contact : Maison des chercheurs étrangers : maisondeschercheursetrangers@univ-nantes.fr
  • Courses for foreign doctorate students (contat your lab)

Courses are reserved for citizens of non-French-speaking countries, holders of the French baccalaureate or a diploma accepted as equivalent to the French baccalaureate. The minimum age is 18. If you do not fulfil those conditions, you must ask the President of the university of Nantes for a special exemption.

French Language Certificates and Tests


i-FLE is an exam center for 2 official French language certification:

  • The DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française) and the DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française) that are recognized by the French Ministry of Education.

  • The TCF (Test de connaissance du français) and the DAP-TCF (required for first and second year undergraduate admission) that are recognized by the French Ministry of Education.

Certification in other languages

Certification is available in German, English,Chinese, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. It is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The expected level is usually around B2, either the intermediate or independent level. Offered to licence students, certification is a requirement for some Master and License programs.

It is highly valued in terms of international mobility and is an asset to your employability.

Preparing for certification in languages

Classes and Workshops
Language Learning Center organizes preparatory classes each semester to help you prepare for foreign language exams. The classes are free of charge and optional. They aim at getting you familiar with the structure of the tests.
